Gold

Chapter Summary

In chapter five, Gold, many characters are either taken away by the Nazis or have a family member/friend taken away. At the beginning of the chapter, Marko and Tsura go to the Charite hospital, find out that Professor Duerr is dead. They also find out that Kizzy has been arrested. Marko then goes back to the wine cellar and takes a nap. Alex is taken to Berlin’s Jewish Community Center where other Jews are being held. He finds his father there and tells him how he was captured. Alex tries to escape but fails. Ruth continues Alex’s treasure hunt. Then, she and Elise leave the house together in search of Ruth’s Mom, who was looking for where Alex and his dad were being held. Ruth and Elise end up at Rosenstrasse where they find Ruth’s mother. Ruth watches as a woman asks for her husband’s keys and then receives them. Ruth tells her mother to do the same thing. Elise thinks that there is no chance that Alex and his father will be released. She watches Mrs. Broden give Ruth the keys with the crucifix on it. Ruth wants to stay longer, but Elise wants to leave. Eventually, they all go to Elise’s house where Elise speaks with Mrs. Unruh. Elise has some visions of Viktor and then goes to sleep. Marko wakes up in the wine cellar and takes a walk through Berlin. He thinks about a random homosexual man, and then about Alex. He walks to Alex’s house, then to Duerr’s. He goes back to the cellar and carves another “M” in the wall. Kizzy is sitting and watching, inside the Jewish Community Center, as Nazi guards lead Jewish people onto trucks. The guards bring more Jewish children into the room. Some people enter the room and Kizzy thinks that they are checking for lice. One of the children starts crying because they hate lice.

Chapter Analysis

In Train, author Danny Cohen expresses the idea that the more knowledge that a character in Train has, the less hopeful they will be. When Tsura finds out that Duerr is dead and that Kizzy was arrested she is flustered, and then she loses all hope that she and Marko can find Kizzy. When Alex is held at the Jewish Community Center, he remains calm and tries to take control of the situation. Ruth reacts to Alex being taken away by crying and constantly being sad and sulky. Elise has visions of her brother, Victor, as a result of him dying. When Marko finds out that Kizzy and Alex were arrested, he tries not to give up hope saying,”we’ll keep looking.”
